Lock not working properly?

A key that snapped, a key that won't turn, a door that won't lock behind you, or a uPVC handle that has gone floppy. Most of these are repairs, not replacements.

What happens when you call

A lock that has started sticking is telling you something, and it is usually cheaper to deal with now than after it fails completely with you on the wrong side of the door. A snapped key can often be extracted and the lock kept. A door that will not lock is frequently a misaligned keep or a worn cam rather than a dead lock. A floppy uPVC handle is usually the multipoint gearbox inside the door, which is a part we can price for you before ordering.

We will always tell you when a repair is the right answer and when replacing is the honest one. If a part is needed, you hear its price before it is fitted.

Worth knowing

  • If a key has snapped, leave the piece where it is. Pulling at it usually pushes it further in.
  • If the door will not lock, check whether the handle lifts freely with the door open. If it does, the problem is the frame, not the lock, which is the cheaper of the two.
  • Ask Alisha for a colleague to review your price question. Keep a photo of the lock edge and handle ready; the final price is agreed on site before work starts.

Questions

Lock repair, answered

If yours isn't here, call and ask. The people who answer know the work.

Is a repair cheaper than a new lock?

Usually, and it is the first thing we look at. But we will not charge you for a repair that we expect to fail again in a month; you will get both prices and the reasoning.

How much is a uPVC gearbox?

Between £180 and £250 in the day, depending on the mechanism, and the locksmith shows you the price for your exact one before ordering or fitting anything.

My door has been forced. Can you make it secure tonight?

Yes. We secure the property first so you can sleep, then quote the repair separately. There is no pressure to decide on the night.

Do you guarantee repairs?

Twelve months on the work and on any parts we fit.
